.Kevin Rudd’s first year in office, the 2020 summit, global warming and the world financial crisis have inspired political cartoonists throughout 2008.
The 11th annual Behind The Lines exhibition is now open at the National Museum of Australia and features 82 of the year’s best satirical drawings.
Curator Kathryn Chisholm says it has been a really interesting year with the change in Federal Government.
“So it’s been a real learning curve examining at the different ways that they’ve chosen to portray a whole new bunch of new faces.
“It’s the first time that we – and cartoonists as well – have approached the year in politics without John Howard as our prime minister,” she said.
“Whilst the election last year was a really invigorating time for Australian politics and presented a whole bunch of new challenges for the artists to put this exhibition together, they still took a while to get their heads together to come up with a few different ways to portray Kevin Rudd in particular – whose face is very symmetrical and actually quite difficult to capture in a satirical way,” she said.”
Ms Chisholm says there was a collective mourning period among cartoonists at the end of the Howard era.
“So I think after that period of mourning they’ve come to realise that it’s a new era in Australian politics and there’s a whole swag of new issues that are going to keep them busy for a long time to come.
“They’re not funny and I think cartoonists have had to really work hard to find a way to approach those issues with pathos as well as finding humour somehow, and I think it is something they’ve done very, very well,” she said.”
Ms Chisholm says topics such as climate change and the world financial crisis have been challenging for cartoonists.
He says there has been a lot of material to inspire cartoonists this year.
Financial Review cartoonist David Pope has been named cartoonist of the year by his peers and the National Museum. .
“There’s some good characters, but I haven’t worked out how to draw Kevin Rudd yet so I’m still practicing that – it took me 10 years to get Howard right,” he said.
“Kevin’s moving so quickly that it’s hard to pinpoint him.

.The Federal Government has defended its decision to delay the announcement of its 2020 emissions cuts target until after global climate talks in Poland. .
But she has told it is more beneficial to reveal it at the same time as the emissions trading scheme white paper.
“As we consulted on the green paper it became increasingly clear that it would benefit from the announcement of the target range and the design decisions on the carbon pollution reduction scheme at the same time.
“Our priority is to provide business and the Australian community with certainty,” she said.
Senator Wong says the Government will play its full role at the Polish meeting in the city of Poznan.
She says both the target and the white paper will now be released later this month.
“Poznan is the mid-point of those meetings and the important point at which we are seeking to get global agreement,” she said
“So Poznan is not the conference at which countries will be asked to make binding commitments.
“This is a complete shemozzle from the Government.”
Greens leader Bob Brown labelled the decision a cop-out.
“It’s all happened in 12 months, it’s quite astonishing. Here’s Australia, which was the big sensation at Bali is going to be the big cop-out at Poznan,” he said.
“There is one political party in this chamber which has no political commitment to targets of any sort and that is the Opposition,” she said.”
In Question Time, today Senator Wong hit back at the Greens’ attack over the delay.
“So we are very clear about which political party in this place, Senator Brown, if you’re going to fight with me, which political party in this place is committed to climate change.
